Best Buy bundles Scribe pen with HTC Flyer for free

We do know that Best Buy has been carrying the 7″ HTC Flyer for a couple of months now, but this time around, something has changed. No, the HTC Flyer did not receive a larger display for you to play Angry Birds or Cut the Rope with, but you will be able to get away with a free Scribe pen in the latest HTC Flyer bundle. Makes me wonder just how folks who purchased the Flyer with the Scribe pen accessory for $80 before this feel.

Guess you can look at the latest 16GB Wi-Fi tablet’s $500 price tag as a $80 discount on the Flyer, while forking out the full amount for the Scribe pen, or see the latter as being free. It must be said that in different markets like Europe, the Scribe pen was already thrown into the mix right from the get go – albeit at a higher overall average price.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide is now free

Whenever you check out deals on group buying sites, there is this timer that tells you just how much time you have left to snag that deal. The same more or less applies to T-Mobile’s latest myTouch 4G Slide, where we know that it will be going for free – never mind if you pick up either black or white colors, over on a web-only promotion that ends later this Thursday. Seems to be the perfect handset for first time smartphone users, or for folks who want to make an upgrade without having to fork out any more dough than they should.

Just to recap, the myTouch 4G Slide was recently released officially, where it will arrive on T-Mobile later this month with a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor as well as a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that ensures you are able to type nicely and in a jiffy without all those typos associated with virtual keyboards.

Students in India Get all MS Development Tools for FREE!!

clip_image002One of the biggest grouse that I had heard from community was that MS development tools were very expensive for people in India. Specifically, students mentioned that it was impossible for them to get the products due to them being expensive.

In the first step, Microsoft made available Express edition of the development tools freely available for everyone. And now, hold ur breadth, it is making the development tools (full editions) available for FREE for students. The products now being made available for FREE are:

  • Operating System: Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition
  • Development IDE: Visual Studio 2005/2008 Professional Edition
  • XNA Game Studio 2.0 and
  • 12-month trial academic subscription to the XNA Creators Club
  • Designer Tools: Expression Studio 2 (includes Web, Blend, Media and Design),
  • Database: SQL Server 2005 Express, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition,

What is great is that Microsoft is making available the entire stack from Operating System to development studio for free to students.

this was revealed today by Bill Gates in an address to IIT Delhi academicians.

To get the software, students don’t have to depend on their colleges. The software is available online at: http://www.dreamsparkindia.com and will be made available offline via DVDs. These DVDs will be distributed by program partners NIIT, Aptech and Hughes Net Fusion Centers. A student merely needs to offer a proof of identity at a branch of these institutes to avail of a DreamSpark DVD…

In times of recession, this should surely boost the employability of the students by providing them the tools that the industry uses for learning. So, when they step out of college the same tool they have been used to would be available at likes of Infosys, Cognizant etc.

However, India with its bad record on piracy may see software from this program being misused in organisations and enterprises. It may be a challenge for MS to curb this.

Now, the ball is in students court!

Microsoft makes its Web Design tool FREE

Today, everyone has a blog. Everyone knows how to design a website (atleast with the right tools).

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer (c) MicrosoftTo support this new era, Microsoft is making available its web design tool FREE for everyone. This free tool (called Sharepoint Designer 2007 or SPD) has been made available at http://www.microsoft.com/spd to download. Sharepoint Designer is successor of the FrontPage tools that many of the people  are already aware of. In addition, this tool has excellent support for customizing the FREE SharePoint Services app that comes with Windows Server.

One might think that by releasing this software for free, Microsoft may be abandoning Sharepoint Designer. However, that’s not true. Sharepoint Designer will continue its development and next version will be released in the future.

While SPD is free, Microsoft also has a professional suite of web design tools available – Expression Web.

Lately Microsoft has been making available many of its tools available for FREE e.g. SQL Server Express, Visual Studio 2008 Express, Live Essentials, PhotoSynth, Accounting Express, Virtual PC, WW Telescope, Windows Defender, Windows Sysinternals and many more. IMHO, you can run your complete business with the above set of free products from Microsoft – NOT a penny to spend on MS software…

Saving your computer from Virus for FREE

j0442058For years, you have relied on ratings of various FREE anti-virus software to choose the one you want for your home PC. the choice has been mostly between AVG or Avira. If you were me, you would believe that one should pay for minimum 2 softwares on your PC:

  1. Your Operating System i.e. Windows
  2. Your Anti-Virus i.e. Norton/ McAfee

Now, Microsoft wants you to keep your computer safe for you. After including a world class firewall since Windows XP, Microsoft has now made available a FREE antivirus for your PC. This antivirus is called Microsoft Security Essentials. The antivirus is available as a FREE download from the link above. It is 4.28 MB of download for Win Vista/ Win 7.

image Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for home PC and counters viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. The software runs in the background and silently monitors the files for all the malware. It schedules scans when the PC is most likely idle and interrupts the user only when there is an action required to keep their PC secure. The software updates itself automatically with the latest definitions without any user intervention. Many of the antivirus behaviours are configurable via the “Settings” tab including scheduled scans, turning real time protections on/ off, excluded file/ file types and many more. MSE is backed up by a series of web services, including telemetry data through the SpyNet service, Microsoft Update, and a separate signature update service.

The antivirus uses the same technology as the Forefront product family (meant for enterprise use). It employs practices like active memory swapping and CPU throttling to limit the impact on your PC performance, even on older or less powerful PCs. On my Windows 7 PC, the process (msseces.exe) takes zero CPU and 1.2 Mb RAM (small, fast and light).

You can install Security Essentials on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 (both x86 and x64 machines). The minimum requirement for the PC though is 1 GB RAM. It does though require a “Genuine” PC check when you install the same. If you have any questions on installation or usage, a support forum is also available to post your queries. In case you discover viruses, spyware, Trojans, worms or other malicious software that were undetected by Microsoft Security Essentials you can send these files to Malware protection Center for analysis.

So take the guesswork out and install the MS Security Essentials TODAY!

P.S.: If you were running a BETA of the product earlier, please make sure that you update the same to the release build. The build no. is (1.0.1611.0) for the released product.
