Bob Dylan will play the first concert at the newly refurbished Capitol Theater in Port Chester, N.Y., when it re-opens on Sept. 4, the famed songwriter announced on his Web site on Friday morning. Mr. Dylan has rehearsed at the theater in recent years and is said to admire the acoustics, but he did not explain why he chose to be the first act at the revamped space. Peter Shapiro, a founder of the Brooklyn Bowl, has invested millions of dollars upgrading the theater’s light and sound systems.
In the late 1960s and early ’70s, the Capitol was an important stop on the rock circuit and hosted memorable concerts by the Grateful Dead, Santana, Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin and other top acts. In recent years, the owners have used the 1,800-seat space mostly for bar mitzvahs and other private events, though its superb acoustics have also made it a favored rehearsal space for musicians like Mr. Dylan and Paul Simon. Mr. Dylan’s performance marks the start of an ambitious and eclectic slate of shows Mr. Shapiro has lined up for the fall, including concerts by the Roots, Fiona Apple and My Morning Jacket. Mr. Dylan is touring this fall to promote his new album “Tempest.” The album, his 35th studio effort, will be released on Sept. 11. Tickets for the concert will go on sale on Aug.17, but Mr. Dylan has reserved a block of tickets that will be sold to members of his fan club four days earlier, on Aug. 13.
